Recently, we carried out our third annual comprehensive survey of over 1,300 flexible (or ‘flex’) workers across the United States, revealing intriguing trends that are reshaping our labor market. Today, we share these insights, encapsulating how flex work is breaking down barriers, revolutionizing power dynamics, and transforming how, when, and where people work.

A Transformative Flex Work Revolution

According to our survey, flex work has exponentially grown in the last decade, evolving from the realm of white-collar freelancers to now influencing the futures of 76.1 million Americans, constituting 55.5% of the labor force in 2021.

The most compelling trend was that the majority of respondents now earn over half of their income through flex work. This not only underlines the wide array of benefits flex work offers, but also proves it’s a win-win for individuals, businesses, and society at large.

Power to the People: The Benefits of Flex Work

Our findings demonstrate that technology-driven solutions are fostering fairness and equality by providing hourly workers with the same level of flexibility usually reserved for salaried workers. Respondents revealed that 51% of their income, on average, came from flex work, a number that soared to 57% for those with at least three years of flex work experience.

The majority (63%) had been engaging in flex roles for over a year, with 29% doing so for three or more years. As flex work was found to pay at least as much, or even more than traditional jobs (according to 73% of respondents), it’s understandable that a mere 8% still preferred traditional employment.
